Academic Writing Coaching

Do you or your graduate students need an edge to demystify academic writing and succeed in today’s competitive publishing environment? Do you feel “stuck” or frustrated with your writing? Are you spending time writing but not making progress on submitting your manuscripts? Consider hiring me as a writing coach!

Building on fifteen years of teaching and publishing experience, over the last three years I’ve honed my writing coaching by working with Ph.D. students, such as Informatics and Computer Science graduate students at the Donald Bren School at University of California, Irvine.

I offer two types of academic writing coaching:

  • Academic writing coaching for individuals. My packages of writing coaching can be purchased directly by graduate students who need extra support.

  • Writing coaching contracts for university departments, schools, and research groups. This service start at just five hours per week over a semester, and typically cover a department or school. A retainer agreement ensures that I’m available just for your students when they need me!

Benefits of my Writing Coaching:

  • Improves writing skills and confidence through conversations, writing activities, and simultaneous editing

  • Increases rates of completing dissertations and publishing articles, conference papers, and book chapters

  • Helps you complete writing projects by breaking larger goals down into actionable tasks

  • Personalizes support through convenient one-on-one Zoom meetings

  • Includes free complementary access to my “Academic Writing Club” explainer videos, articles, worksheets, and podcast, and discounts on courses

  • I’m so confident in my academic writing coaching that I invite you to compare my rate and services with competitors!

You helped me learn how to write from a place of joy, rather than one of fear.

Editing Packages for Busy Academics

Rapid Developmental Review of an Academic Book Manuscript
$1,000.00

If you have a book manuscript that you’d like professional feedback on, I now offer a fixed-price service. I will fully read your manuscript (up to 70,000 words, not including references) and offer at least 1000 words of developmental feedback to improve your book’s argument, story, structure, and tone.

Should you have more specific needs (e.g., brainstorming meetings) or require line editing, consider contacting me about a custom scope of work.

Full Edit of an Academic Article
$600.00

Does your manuscript need a final pass before submission? Or maybe you’ve received a “Revise and Resubmit” that requests additional editing? This is the service for you! I can line edit your manuscript and offer developmental suggestions for improvement. Together, these line and developmental edits strengthen your article’s readability, argument, flow, and conformity to journal or conference submission guidelines.

Coaching for and Editing a Book Proposal and Sample Chapters
$1,750.00

If you’re looking to start an academic book project, this is the package for you! Through a sequence of effective coaching meetings and activities, we can produce a compelling book proposal that will catch a university press editor’s eye. Then I give your proposal and sample chapters (at minimum, the introduction and one “body” chapter) an additional polish with line and developmental edits.

Although I can help with most types of book proposals, I enjoy working on “dissertation to book” conversion projects or book proposals in the early stages of development—so it’s fine if you just have an idea and a few drafted chapters!

Custom Writing Support for Busy Academics

As an academic, your time is scarce. You have big ideas, but spend most of your time responding to emails, teaching, or in meetings. Maybe you’re an Associate Professor dreaming of finishing that world-changing book. Or perhaps you’re an Assistant Professor who needs to get a few more articles off of your hard drive and into leading journals. Maybe a paper you’re co-authoring with students has just gotten a bit complicated, or you’re putting off responding to an R&R. You could even be ABD and have a bit of time left to publish before you start a new position.

These are all situations in which working with a seasoned academic editor can help you! Together we can finish that book proposal, book manuscript, or set of articles on a timeline that works for you. For the last five years I’ve been helping academic clients at leading Universities reduce their stress, improve their publishing record, and reclaim their time.

I’m also happy to invoice Universities directly through my LLC to use institutional funds, such as startup funds or grant money!

I offer the following services, organized into custom packages ($1000 minimum project size) to fit your needs:

  • Line editing a manuscript to improve sentence structure, paragraph organization, and flow of ideas

  • Developmental editing that offers high-level, actionable suggestions to reorganize a manuscript to improve chances of publication

  • Remote coaching meetings to improve writing skills, demystify academic publishing, and strategize about the best route to publishing your project
